Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Magnetic Bearing Design Engineer Level 2/3 based out of Sunnyvale, CA. This role is part of the advanced development team that will be developing next generation technology and architecture for propulsion and power generation machinery for US Navy submarines. What you’ll get to do:
The Magnetic Bearing Design Engineer Level 2/3 will work with a team of engineers in electromagnetics and design to explore, design, develop, and test new magnetic bearing technology and architecture. This position requires the ability to take ownership over tasking and drive to completion working with a multidiscipline team to turn ideas into reality. This role has potential to grow into the Magnetic Bearing Design Lead based on performance.
This position may be filled at a higher grade based on the qualifications listed below:
Basic Qualifications for T02:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 2 years related experience; or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline no related experience.
- 2 years of experience in Electric Machine design and analysis.
- Experience implementing designs.
- Solid understanding of electromagnetic principles for power generator or force production.
- Solid understanding of construction / manufacturing methods of electric machines.
- Demonstrated technical team leadership.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance.

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 5 years related experience; or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline 3 years related experience.
- 2 years of experience in Electric Machine design and analysis.
- Experience implementing designs.
- Solid understanding of electromagnetic principles for power generator or force production.
- Solid understanding of construction / manufacturing methods of electric machines.
- Demonstrated technical team leadership.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of electrical machine and/or inverter / drive engineering experience.
- Experience with software for system evaluation such as Matlab Simulink, Simplorer, etc.
- Electromagnetic analysis experience with FEA tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, Altair Flux 2D/3D, or similar type of electromagnetic analysis software.
- Experience with electric machines for marine propulsion applications.
- Experience with naval nuclear propulsion programs.
- Experience with Magnetic Bearings
- Leadership experience and interest
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
